CONGREGATIONAL CARE MINISTRIES

Shrove Tuesday Celebration – Tuesday, February 21, 6-7:30 pm
Shrove Tuesday is coming on February 21! Pancakes, the infamous Pancake Relay, live jazz, making Alleluias and a special service is part and parcel of a fun evening for every family member. Tickets will be on sale following the worship services today. Tickets are $7/adult; $4/children ages 5-10 years; children age 4 and under are free; or a family ticket is available for $17. Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the day before Ash Wednesday. Years ago, Shrovetide was a time to party and eat up all the fancy foods which were forbidden during the forty days of Lent. Often pancakes were the meal of the day, for in this way people could consume much of the soon-to-be-forbidden food. Come enjoy our version of Mardi Gras. Fun for all!

Many of you have asked for news of Becky Kane, whose recovery from eye surgery is progressing well.  She hopes to be returning to her apartment sometime next week, but will be unable to drive for several months until her eyes are completely healed and she receives new glasses. Becky will also need to limit her physical activity somewhat.   If you are able to help with transportation, meals, errands, or in other ways, please contact Nancy Berry in the church office.  Please continue to keep Becky in your prayers, as well as our other homebound members who could benefit from your help and concern.

BECKY KANE has lovingly prepared coffee and set it up for both services for many years.  As Becky recovers from her recent eye surgery, she will need to limit her physical activities for several months.  We need people from each service to pitch in to make coffee and set out the cups and other utensils.  And we always need people to bring snacks, and tidy up afterward.  Training can be provided.  If you enjoy having coffee and snacks after worship, please sign up to help out.

Margaret Simon has moved to Emeritus Senior Living, 15241 NE 20th in Bellevue, and would love to have visitors.

Come Sing With Usat Sunrise Senior Living Center on the 3rd Sunday each month. Trina McCarrell and Nancy Berry lead a brief chapel service which includes some old favorite hymns. Our next service is February 19, at 11:00 AM. Sunrise is located at 15928 NE 8th (just past Crossroads Mall).

Book Discussion Group to meet on February 20

The 60th Anniversary is Coming!

ADULT CHRISTIAN FORMATION

  • “Speaking Christian” Adult Study Group                                                                                                                                                                                 Christianity has a problem -- we have let language define our Christianity instead of letting Christianity define our language. Theologian Marcus Borg illustrates in his book Speaking Christian just how modern Christianity is perpetuating this problem.  This class meets Sunday mornings at 9:55 a.m. in N-12.  Also ask about tickets to hear Marcus Borg speak Feb. 10-11 at University Congregational Church of Christ.

  • New Class:“What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be A Christian?”  A ten week adult book study/discussion group for those who long to ask the tough questions surrounding our commonly held beliefs. Group size is limited to 12 members. This class meets Sunday mornings at 9:55 a.m. in the Wesley Room.

  • FaithLink Discussion Group will continue to meet each Sunday at 9a.m. in room S-15. No sign up necessary to attend and each class has a new topic for discussion related to our Christian faith and current events…. as well as a free cup.

  • ”Justice for the Poor”                                                                                                                                                             When the wealthy are dying from diseases of overabundance and the poor are dying from inadequate health care, poor diets, and stress-related illnesses, there is spiritual disease in society. Justice for the Poor recaptures the biblical vision that links poverty with justice.  Jim Wallis and Sojourners, in this six-session study designed for use with the Justice for the Poor book and video, will engage the Monday night study group meeting at 6 p.m. to take action on behalf of the poor.

Also on Sunday mornings
  • ANIMAL CRACKERS:  An intergenerational opportunity to explore world hunger and how Heifer helps animals, people and plants live in harmony as God’s good creation. Sundays, 10 – 11 a.m. in Room S15.  Leapin’ Llamas (February 5) and Ba-a-awesome Goats (February 12).

A Simple Cup of Coffee
Mary’s Place (Church of Mary Magdalene) and Tent City 4 are both in great need of coffee. Can you help? Bring a large can of regular coffee to the church office and put it in the bright “yellow” box marked “COFFEE.” Thank you.

Sager Brown School Bags: The "Bag Ladies" have been sewing bags for the last three years. We recently shipped another 100 bags for a total of 3,400 bags. If you would like to help sew these simple cloth bags which are used to hold school supplies, call Lael O'Neal (425-869-2585). The school supplies are shipped world-wide to areas where flood, earthquake or fire have damaged schools.

Haiti Mission Trip
We are equipping and sending our second team to Haiti on February 17. We have now heard that this team is being sent to Furcy, Haiti. We will be working to repair and add to the current cook house there. We have also been asked to conduct Vacation Bible School activities for local children and to bring healthy snacks for a weekly distribution to children in a tent city, collapse-able cots, straps for holding luggage on the tops of vehicles, rope, trowels for cement work, and easy to read English Bibles.
If you can supply some of these items please contact Keith Haines at keithhaines@me.com or phone 425-281-1700. If you would prefer to make a cash donation please make your check out to First United Methodist Church Bellevue with "Haiti Mission Team" in the memo line. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all that have already helped equip this team to serve in Haiti.
